P.E.T.S. Vocational Training

PRE-EMPLOYMENT TRANSITION SERVICES (P.E.T.S.)

Voices Together is a non-profit music therapy organization in Central North Carolina that is a service provider for P.E.T.S. (Pre-Employment Transition Services) through the NC Division of Vocational Rehabilitation. (VR)

The Voices Together program helps students learn to speak and listen, work well with others, manage their emotions, and learn job skills. Music therapists use counseling skills to validate participants as they learn how to communicate in a work environment, self-regulate their behavior, and ask for help. The program uses music and educational techniques to build important skills to help each student transition from school into the community.

Every EC student, both verbal and non-verbal, can benefit from the program.

SESSIONS

One Voices Together music therapist will be assigned to each classroom (8-12 students) and will offer a one-hour session once a week. In each interactive session students are arranged in a semi-circle around the music therapist. The structured program begins with a written schedule of the program activities for that session.  Every session includes a discussion section, problem solving and practice elements with peers.

FALL SESSIONS 2018

PHASE I: Job Exploration – Students practice identifying career pathways and community resources, connecting personal strengths and interests with community employment and involvement options.

PHASE II: Instruction in Self Advocacy – Students discuss topics such as understanding rights and responsibilities and practice their ability to communicate vocational interests relative to their personal strengths.
