“I went to see a group and one of the students who did not speak spoke for the first time in the group. The teacher was crying. It was a very emotional moment for everyone, even the student’s peers.”

Vocational Rehabilitation Unit Manager

Voices Together is a designated service provider in North Carolina for Pre-Employment Transition Services (Pre-ETS), a federally funded program administered by the N.C. Division of Vocational Rehabilitation (VR), part of the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services.

Pre-ETS offers VOICSS® music therapy at no cost for eligible students to overcome challenges to employment.

Our VOICSS®-trained music therapists help students develop communication, social and job skills, enabling them to transition successfully from school to community.

Therapists engage and validate participants as they learn to communicate in a work environment, self-regulate their behavior and ask for help – key elements for success in the workplace.

Any student, verbal or non-verbal, can benefit from this program.

Voices Together music therapists work weekly with eight to 12 students in 45-60-minute interactive group sessions.

The structured sessions begin with a written schedule of the program activities for that session. Students sit in a semi-circle around the therapist to engage in sessions that combine discussion, problem-solving, practice elements and, of course, song, to advance students’ communication and social skills.

NOTE: In response to the COVID-19 crisis, Voices Together music therapists are providing programming through virtual interactive group sessions. The structured format of the VOICSS® method allows students to continue discussions, problem-solving and practice elements to develop vocational skills while practicing social distancing from their homes.

Our proven, evidence-based program has yielded transformational outcomes and impact in public school exceptional children classrooms, communities and vocational settings since 2007.

Pre-ETS is available at no cost for students who are:

  • Age 14-21
  • Eligible for special education services under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act or considered to be an individual with a disability under Section 504
  • Enrolled in a traditional, alternative secondary or post-secondary program.

Students in other VR programs may enroll in Voices Together Pre-ETS.

How to Enroll

Parents and students must submit a Pre-ETS consent form to their VR counselor. Once VR approves a student’s participation, our program coordinator can schedule services.

How to Start a Pre-ETS Program

To bring our program into your school, reach out to your child’s teachers, your school’s administration, the VR representative for your district or district-level representatives for Exceptional Children and Occupational Course of Study programs to encourage them to contract with Voices Together for Pre-ETS services.

Alternately, contact Voices Together’s Pre-ETS Program Coordinator Heather Rudkowski to find or start an after-school Pre-ETS VOICSS® program.
